Leland Clinton Ewalt, 90, of Knox City, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at the Sunset Home in Quincy, Illinois.
Leland was born on November 2, 1923 on the family farm near Knox City, Missouri, the son of John Edward, Jr. and Vern Snell Ewalt.
He attended rural school and graduated from the Knox City High School. He served his country, during WW II, in the United States Army, from November 19, 1943 to February 8, 1946. Leland was a rifleman in the 167 Infantry Regiment in the battles of New Guinea and the Philippines. He received Bronze Star, Bronze Arrowhead and a Purple Heart for wounds received on August 11, 1944 in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
Leland grew up on the family farm and continued to live there his entire life, he worked more than 60 years in the United Sates Post Office, as a Rural Carrier, out of Knox City, Missouri. He enjoyed the life long friends he made on his route and was a history buff, keeping clippings and pictures of the more memorable events.
Leland was a member of the Knox City American Legion Post #358, Colony Masonic Lodge, receiving a 50 year pin and the Rural Postal Carriers Association.
He is survived by sisters-in-law, including Dorothy Ewalt of Knox City, Missouri; nieces and nephews, Clifton Ewalt and dear friend, June Stambaugh of Knox City, Missouri and Denise Head and her husband Larry of Novelty, Missouri; a great niece, Shania Ewalt; numerous cousins and a host of friends.
Leland was preceded in death by his parents, John and Vern Ewalt; two brothers, Eldon Ewalt and Austin Ewalt.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.
Visitation will be after 9:00 a.m. on Saturday with the family greeting friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Burial with Full Military Honors will be in the Knox City Cemetery, Knox City, Missouri by Knox City American Legion Post #358.
Pastor Mike Wilson will officiate and Pastor Doug Wilson will assist and music will be provided by Paul and Marsha Burton. Casket Bearers will be Eddie See, Clay See, Alan See, Lynn Ewalt, Tony Ewalt, Tony Pulse, and Alan Peavler.
An expression of sympathy in memory of Leland Ewalt may be left to the Knox City Cemetery Association. A memorial may be left at or mailed to the Doss Funeral Home 208 N. 4th Street, Edina, Missouri 63537.
