    Carl Thomas Kriegshauser, 89, of Edina, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Edina, Missouri.

    Carl was born on September 22, 1924, in Edina, Missouri, the son of William and Stella McAtee Kriegshauser.

    He was a lifelong resident of Edina and attended both the St. Joseph Grade and High Schools graduating in the Class of 1942.

    After high school, Carl was accepted into the United States Merchant Marine Academy and Cadet Corps as a Cadet/Midshipman and graduated in the Class of 1944 with rank of Third Mate Navigator (USNR-USMM). Carl served his country during World War II, sailing on various types of merchant ships (troop, cargo, tankers) in the Atlantic, Pacific, Artic and Indian Oceans, the Caribbean, South China and Barents Seas, as well as the Persian Gulf. He navigated nine voyages on the famed Murmansk Run.

    He returned to Edina after World War II, with his brother Paul, took over the operation of Kriegshauser Brothers Furniture Store and Funeral Home. The funeral home closed in 1994 and the furniture store sold in 1996 when Carl retired.

    On April 3, 1948, in Edina, Missouri, Carl married Mary Margaret Early at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

    Carl was a member of Knox City Legion Post #358 and the Knights of Columbus Council #846. He volunteered as a basketball coach for both St. Joseph Grade and High Schools, coached little league baseball, Cubmaster and Scoutmaster Troop 28 BSA and Meals on Wheels. Carl served on Boards of the St. Joseph Improvement Foundation and Edina Country Club.

    Carl enjoyed playing cards especially Bridge, playing sports, golf but most of all spending time with his children and grandchildren.

    Carl is survived by his wife, Mary Kriegshauser of Edina, Missouri; four sons, Mike and his wife Susan Kriegshauser of Eldon, Missouri, Matthew Kriegshauser of Edina, Missouri, Stephen and his wife Lisa Kriegshauser of Columbia, Missouri, and Patrick and his wife Tammy of Kirksville, Missouri; one daughter, Ann and her husband Danny Bayles of Moberly, Missouri; sixteen grandchildren, Bo Bayles, Bari Bayles-Riddle, Summer Kriegshauser, Delaney Kriegshauser, Will Kriegshauser, Arielle Kriegshauser, Thomas Kriegshauser, Nicole Johnston, Lauren Springer, Derek Kriegshauser, Dylan Kriegshauser, Mitch Kriegshauser, Vin Kriegshauser, Devin Noonan, Steffan Kriegshauser, Haven Kriegshauser; two step-grandsons, Christian Dixon and Joe Oswald; three step-granddaughters, Jessica Beckmann, Raegan and Erin Oswald along with numerous nieces and nephews. 

    He is preceded in death by a son, Nicholas Kriegshauser, and a daughter Mary Elizabeth Kriegshauser during infancy; sisters, Dorothy O’Connor and Marie Lahman; and brothers, Paul and Arthur Kriegshauser.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Aloysius Church in Baring, Missouri.

    Visitation will be Friday, February 28, 2014, after 2 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri. A Christian Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening.

    Burial with full military honors by Knox City American Legion Post, will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Edina, Missouri.

    Father Joseph Hoi will celebrate the Mass and music will be provided by Patty Scott, Brent Karhoff and Beth Frye. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Thomas Kriegshauser, Bo Bayles, Will Kriegshauser, Derek Kriegshauser, Dylan Kriegshauser, Mitch Kriegshauser and Vin Kriegshauser.

    An expression of sympathy in memory of Carl Thomas Kriegshauser may be left to the St. Joseph Restoration Fund, Knox County Nursing Home or to the Donor’s Choice. A memorial may be left at or mailed to the Doss Funeral Home 208 N. 4th Street, Edina, Missouri 63537.
