Dorthy Funk


Dorthy Funk Picture_0.jpg      Dorthy Estella Funk, 72, of Hurdland, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at the Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Missouri.

    Dorthy was born on July 12, 1936, in Hurdland, Missouri, the daughter of Jesse Earl and Louise Marie Diekmann Bowen.

    She lived her entire life in Hurdland, Missouri, graduated from the eighth grade at Fox Rural School before graduating from the Hurdland High School in the Class of 1955. Dorthy went to work at the Burnham Manufacturing in Edina, Missouri, and continued when the glove factory changed names to Edina Manufacturing, and worked nearly 50 years, retiring several times.

    On October 14, 1956, at the old Faith Lutheran Church in Kirksville, Missouri, Dorthy married Vernon Francis "Buddy" Funk, Jr.

    They were members of the Faith Lutheran Church in Kirksville, Missouri and she was very active with the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Altar Guild, Evangelism Committee, and the Fellowship Committee for many years.

    Dorthy was also active with the Classy Lassies Red Hat Club, Hurdland 4th of July Committee, and the Hurdland School Reunion. She enjoyed her flowers and, with Buddy's help, labored in her garden. She enjoyed camping, but her love was her family and she worried about them every day.

    She is survived by her husband, Buddy Funk of Hurdland, Missouri; a son John and his wife Dee Funk of  Jefferson City, Missouri; a sister, Marie and her husband Buddy Garman of Kirksville, Missouri; four grandchildren, Lorri and her husband Damon Lanz of Fairbury, Illinois, Holly Funk of Columbia, Missouri, Carmen Funk and her fiance Chris Mueller of Pacific, Missouri, and Lydia Funk of Jefferson City, Missouri; four great grandchildren, Tristan, Christian, Marisa, and Jathan Lanz; a brother-in-law, John A. and his wife Eileen Funk of Abingdon, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Paul Ann Lynn of Edina, Missouri; nieces and nephews, Darrell and his wife Henrietta Garman of Kirksville, Missouri, Carol and her husband Steve Holt of Columbia, Missouri, Steve and his wife Judy Funk of Belleville,  Illinois, Mark and his wife Terri Funk of Columbus, Ohio and Terri Funk of Abingdon, Illinois; great nieces, great nephews and a host of friends.

    Funeral services will be Saturday, July 26, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church in Kirksville, Missouri.

    Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.

    Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Hurdland, Missouri.

    Reverend David Lukefahr will officiate and Reverend Mark Appold will assist, and music will be provided by Kevin Hoshaw, vocalist. Casket Bearers will be Jim Hamlin, J.B. Hamlin, Gene Yoakum, Larry Sykes, Gene McCarty, and Gary Yoakum along with Honorary Bearers Harry Holman, Glen Moots, Roland Hamlin, Kenny Campbell, Larry Alexander and Wade Coorts.

    An expression of sympathy in memory of Dorthy Funk may be left to the Faith Lutheran Church for the Kitchen Fund. A memorial may be left at or mailed to the Doss Funeral Home 208 N. 4th Street, Edina, Missouri 63537.
